Natick street renamed to honor commander killed in Afghanistan

NATICK, Mass. — A street leading to a Army base in Natick has been renamed to honor a military commander killed in Afghanistan.

The MetroWest Daily News reports that Kansas Street was changed Friday to Gen. Greene Avenue.

Maj. Gen. Harold Greene was a senior commander of Natick Soldier Systems Center between 2009 and 2011. The 55-year-old officer was killed last year when an Afghan soldier hid in a bathroom and opened fire. Fifteen others were wounded.

Officials also unveiled a memorial to Greene.

Speakers remembered his personable attitude and his love for his family, the Army, the Red Sox, Natick and the United States.
