FORT CAMPBELL — Five days after a Fort Campbell soldier was swept away after falling into a creek, his body was found Tuesday.
A search and rescue operation ended when the body of the 101st Airborne Division soldier was found about 500 meters from the low water cross over Little West Fork Creek where he fell in Friday, according to a news release issued Tuesday afternoon.
The soldier's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Fort Campbell and the Montgomery County Water Rescue Squad were immediately called to assist in the search for the soldier Friday evening after receiving notification that he had been swept away by the creek's strong currents. The Montgomery County squad searched from Ringgold Creek bridge to Fort Campbell, said Montgomery County Emergency Management Director Jerry Buchanan.
It is the same waterway but goes by both names.
The soldier was off duty with two other soldiers from his unit when the incident happened.
On Saturday, the search for the soldier was officially changed from search and rescue to search and recovery, the news release states.
500 meters is approximately 546 yards.
