A soldier based in Bahrain who was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve died Wednesday in Landstuhl, Germany, the Defense Department said Friday.

Sgt. 1st Class Maitland Wilson, 38, passed away from a medical issue, Army Military Surface Deployment and Distribution spokesman Frederick Rice told Army Times.

Wilson, a cargo specialist with the 831st Transportation Battalion, 595th Transportation Brigade, was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, the DoD release said, the U.S. military effort against ISIS.

Wilson, who was from Brooklyn, New York, joined the Army in 2000 and had been with the unit since last March, Rice said.

Wilson had deployed numerous times, including to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Haiti. His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, five Army Commendation Medals and two Army Achievement Medals.

The incident is under investigation, according to the release.
