Army Criminal Investigation Command is investigating after a soldier assigned to U.S. Army Alaska was found dead in his barracks room Tuesday, officials said.

Spc. Porfiro Gutierrez Jr., 24, was assigned to the 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. He was a recovery vehicle operator, according to a Friday news release from U.S. Army Alaska.

Gutierrez joined the Army in May 2013 in Roseville, California, and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, after completing initial entry training.

He had been assigned to U.S. Army Alaska since April 2017.

U.S. Army Alaska officials declined to release any more information while the investigation is ongoing.
